'Stagnation' - De Fletcher's Blog Post - March 14, 2007

De Fletcher's blog post is entitled, "Stagnation."

Fletcher says, "Stagnation reminds me of a pool of water that has no fresh water coming into it.

After a while it becomes murky and smelly and may even dry up.

So, what was once lovely becomes something quite different.

When people become stagnant, they kind of go through the same metamorphosis as that pool of water." Read Complete Post

'Be A Better Listener With These Great Questions' - Kevin Eikenberry's Article - March 13, 2007

Kevin Eikenberry's article is reprinted here.

Be a Better Listener With These Great Questions
by Kevin Eikenberry

At some point we’ve all wished we had listened more carefully (for me it’s at least once per day). And I’m sure you have been speaking at some time and wished the person you were talking to was listening more intently.

It is obvious that more effective listening helps us better understand what is being said. Perhaps less obviously, better listening also helps us hear what isn’t being said – helping us get the meaning behind someone’s words.

Perhaps most importantly, listening effectively is one of the best ways to build relationships with others. Paying close attention and seeking to understand what someone is saying matters deeply to the other person. It shows our respect and caring for both the person and their message, and it is an incredibly supportive behavior.

While some people may think of listening as a passive process (“just shut up and listen”), the best listeners know they must be actively engaged to listen most effectively. One of the best things we can do to be better listeners is to ask better questions.

Reasons Great Listeners Ask Questions

There are specific purposes for the questions asked when trying to listen more successfully. They fall into four basic categories:

  • Questions to confirm understanding
  • Questions to learn more
  • Questions to understand meaning or feelings
  • Questions to encourage and show support

This short bullet list itself is helpful because if you keep these purposes in mind, you will be able to formulate a good listening question at the appropriate time.

So, you may be wondering, what is a really good listening question? The rest of this article provides you with specific questions that you can use to become a better listener.

Questions to confirm understanding

  • So what you are saying is . . .(fill in the blank). . . is that correct?
  • How did you come to your decision?
  • What factors were most important?

Questions to learn more

  • Can you explain that further?
  • Can you say more about that?
  • Can you help me understand?
  • Can you elaborate on that?

Note – Adding “please” to these questions is a great idea!

Questions to understand meaning or feelings

  • How do you feel about it?
  • How do you mean?
  • What is your biggest concern?

Questions to encourage and show support

  • What did you have in mind?
  • What is exciting about this to you?
  • How can I help or support you?

Start using some of these questions today – you will find opportunities in nearly every conversation you have. While these questions will work great when used verbatim, I encourage you to modify them (or create new ones) to make them truly “yours.” To really be effective, your questions need to be in “your voice” and meet the needs of your conversation.

Any questions?

'The Pattern Of Language For Success' - Jan Tincher's Blog Post - March 13, 2007

The Pattern Of Language For Success

It's so easy to feel successful that many successful people wonder why others don't feel successful all of the time.

Actually, the answer is simple.

It's normal to feel unsuccessful, because we are usually programmed to think we can't feel successful *all* the time -- some even think it's not healthy, that we should have the downs so we can have the ups.

And guess what!

People usually go along with that thinking! Why do they do that? Probably because they have the continual experience of having their mind go to their failures.

Why?

Because many don't know the strategy, the way to feel successful -- consciously. In these next three issues, I'm going to show you how. Today's article is the Pattern Of Language For Success.

I will be following it up with the Pattern Of Physiology For Success, then the Pattern Of Belief/Focus For Success next Tuesday.

For now, let's start with the basics. The feeling of success is an emotion, just as the feeling of failure is -- and they are both an emotional pattern you have developed, just as all emotions have patterns. You don't feel an emotion, you do an emotion, or you do an emotional pattern.

These are the three patterns that govern our lives:

The pattern of how we use language -- words and tonality.

The pattern of how we use your physiology -- our body language.

The pattern of what we focus on -- the things we believe.

Those 3 patterns make up our emotions. Successful or unsuccessful feelings/emotions are learned and contributed to daily. Then, sooner or later, a pattern in formed.

We all have a pattern for success, but many of us use the pattern for *unsuccess*, or failure, much more than we do the pattern for success.

If you're happy, stressed, afraid, upset, or any other emotion, you're using your thoughts in a certain way. You're saying certain things outside and inside your head -- in a certain way, certain pattern.

Regardless if you are thinking or speaking or hearing, certain words, said in a certain way, trigger you. When someone yells at you in a way reminiscent of when you were growing up, you react the same way you always did -- good or bad. Why? Because it's a pattern you've learned.

If you want to be successful, but you are feeling like a failure, I suggest that you don't *do* the emotion of failure anymore.

How would it feel if you were successful all the time? You would stop saying those things in your head that trigger failure, right? Why not start your new success pattern by making a new trigger, one that would actually trigger a good feeling, a feeling of success, whenever you started to feel failure?

(If you don't know what a *trigger* is or if you don't know how to trigger, you can learn both here: Http://www.tameyourbrain.com/learneasier_triggering.htm

Learn how to deactivate old triggers that get you no where here: http://www.tameyourbrain.com/deactivatingtriggers.htm )

You want to be in a productive, successful state all the time? Then, it's up to you. No one else can do it. No one else can bring you down, either. (Pay attention to what brings you down, and deactivate that trigger.)

A hero is a state of mind. Be your own hero. Learn those certain words that magnify a certain emotion. Learn those certain words that lower the intensity of emotion. Learn those certain words that change your state. Start taking charge of your emotions.

Have you heard motivational speakers? They move you with certain words and with the intensity in which they speak them. Well, guess who's moving you every day, up AND down?

You are! Notice the keywords that make you depressed or get you excited. Most of the things you believe start with the very first time you heard them, said them, thought them with emotion. (Then, they are repeated again and again. Now, you believe them.)

Our Pattern Of Language is important to us. Once we realize how it affects our friendships, our relationships, our lives, and, yes, our success, we pay more attention to it. Learn just how important your Pattern Of Language is, then utilize that knowledge every day.

Thanks for reading,

Jan
